  4.     From jazz to Jerry Lewis, American pop culture has often found
  5. a welcome audience in France. But nothing could have prepared the
  6. French for the latest U.S. export: Les Crados (The Dirty Ones), the
  7. Gallic edition of those Stateside sensations, the Garbage Pail
  8. Kids. A gruesome gallery of children's bubble-gum cards, Les Crados
  9. include such characters as Mathieu Degueu (Matthew Nosepicker),
  10. Herve W.C. (Toilet-Face Herve) and Laetitia Pus-de-Bras (Stinky-Pit
  11. Letitia).

  13.     Licensed to a French journalist by the New York-based Topps
  14. company, which launched their American forebears in 1985, Les
  15. Crados are suddenly de rigueur among French schoolchildren. Even
  16. though they were banned in some schools across the country within
  17. two months after their release in January, some 12 million packs
  18. have been sold at 40 cents each. But the real grossing-out has
  19. taken place among legions of appalled grownups. Les Crados have
  20. even come to the attention of Premier Michel Rocard, who said he
  21. was "astounded." The National Institute for Consumers' Affairs has
  22. been asked to investigate the craze.
